First Nations, Mining Exploration and Impact Benefit Agreements

Join the Executive Director of the First Nations Mining and Energy Council, Dave Porter, and Gavin Dirom, President and CEO of the Association of Mineral Exploration BC, for a discussion on the importance and challenges of negotiating and signing mineral exploration agreements between impacted First Nations and exploration companies.

Suggestions on how best to achieve successful impact benefit agreements that met the needs and mandates of both the communities and the company will be examined.

Mr. Porter is a member of the Kaska Nation whose traditional territory covers a large part of north-eastern British Columbia and south-eastern Yukon. His career includes journalism, politics, communications and extensive public service on behalf of aboriginal organizations as well as public governments in the Yukon, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories.

Mr. Dirom has over 20 years of mineral exploration and mining industry experience, with a focus on project permitting, safety, environmental management and sustainable mineral development in British Columbia. Before joining AME BC, Gavin held the role of Vice President, Environment, Health and Safety at the Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC). Prior to MABC, he served as Senior Policy Advisor with Natural Resources Canada. He also worked in the industry for over a decade for a number of exploration and mining companies.
